Fantastic budget level. I would not hesitate using this on a construction site. However, I bought this for residential use. It accurately works over 200 feet away. I never intended to use it that far but in the event I need to, I know it will work. The story pole is great quality and very easy to use. The tripod is awesome with such great versatility to get your laser level. To level the unit it only takes about a minute.
There are a lot of inexpensive laser levels on Amazon, but many look to be from companies I never heard of. I bought this kit from Johnson Level & Tool because they are seriously in the business. This is a low-end system for sure compared to many of their products, but it should fit my needs.
I bought the kit because it has everything you need to do measurements by yourself, indoors or out. The target and glasses are find for indoor, dim light or short distance uses. The detector is well-suited for use outdoors when you may not be able to see the beam reflection (don't ever look into a laser!). The 5mW laser will give more distance than the 1mW units. Yes, it's still red but that's fine for the detector.
I bought the manual adjustment version to save some money over the automatic pendulum-based unit. I don't mind setting a couple level bubbles on the base when setting up for a measurement.
I have to say, though, that I absolutely hate their calibration "fine tuning" procedure. Walking back and forth with the tripod and trying to line up to a previous mark is a pain unless you're on a perfectly level floor in a large area. I tried this and gave up.
Instead, I made a water level using 100' of clear 1/4" hose (like this: https://amzn.to/2JCJ3aZ ). I siphoned (don't pour or you'll get air bubbles!) some colored water into it so the water levels were conveniently close to where the laser was hitting and held the ends up with some photo tripods and clamps (any way to hold the ends up will work). I set the level on its tripod about halfway (not critical) between the ends of the water level with one axis aligned as in their procedure. I adjusted the level by going back and forth, using the target card to compare the beam to the water level until the distances matched as closely as I could get. I could have used the stick and electronic sensor in a similar manner.
With the axis now set to true level, I removed the hex (Allen) head adjustment screw "cap" (actually it's a hex screw you back out and remove completely) and adjusted the vial using the underlying hex (Allen) head screw deeper inside the unit. It was difficult for me to get the tool into the screw socket due to what seem to be metal clips inside the adjustment hole. I was persistent and managed to get past the clips to the actual adjustment screw. In hindsight I would recommend getting the tool into the screw head before you level each axis to avoid knocking it around too much trying to get it adjusted.
With the one axis adjusted, I replaced the "cap" over the adjustment screw, I turned the unit 90 degrees and repeated for the other axis.
Hopefully it won't get jarred out of calibration too often. It's a good idea to check it periodically.
I had to do some grade work on my property and needed something to shoot the grade so I gave this a try. It works great and it works great for inside use too. The only thing I would say is you can't see the lazer over about 20 or 30 feet outside in the daytime, but this kit came with the attachment that attaches to the aluminum Pole that will beep when in line with the lazer. I did try it at night and went out over 100 yards and you can see the lazer just fine.
Love this tool, super easy to set up and use. The accuracy was excellent, I set up my home and two out buildings with it. Got compliments from subs on how flat projects were, even the inspector was impressed.
So far this laser has been amazing! The receiver is very easy to use the tripod mounts and stands are very well built. The only complaint I have is the carrying strap can interfere with the tripod lock. Not too annoying and a relatively easy fix. So far my most favorite feature is the laser lock. You can set it using the arrows left and right to position the laser in a certain spot. This comes in handy for hanging multiple pictures and shelves inside.
I really wanted to like this unit, but can't get it to work reliably. One note is that the unit I received has an orange-red laser unit, but other than that it looks the same. As I use it, in some spots, it works as expected. Tells you whether to go up, or down until you hit center. When I move 20 feet down my driveway (similar distance to laser) the receiver goes crazy, almost like it's being overloaded with laser beams. The receiver can be 2 feet above the beam, or not even pointing at the laser, and still ringing. After talking with tech support, I tried a new receiver -- same results. To ensure I wasn't receiving reflected signals, I surrounded the detection area of the receiver with a square fashioned from a folded index card. This effectively limited the "view" of the detector so I know it wasn't receiving reflected signals from windows, etc. Same results. The only thing I can imagine is that the laser may be spraying the beam everywhere, but it doesn't appear so optically. I'll keep the unit for a few days before returning to see if someone can help me understand what I'm doing wrong. I would love to hear any suggestions from users or the manufacturer (Johnson Level). Thanks for your help!

I have this unit, and it works fine for me .what I don't like is that the carrying case won't hold nessisary attachments that come with this kit, therefore I have left the receiver at the shop costing hours of down time.
